Second phase of flood control project to launch this year

Rising temperatures in Pakistan’s northern areas are raising the risk of glacial lakes bursting and mountain communities in Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral districts being flooded. With $36 million approved by the Green Climate Fund in 2016, the Government is preparing to launch a second phase of a large-scale GLOF risk reduction project. Under the project - covering 12 districts in Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and benefiting 29 million people - 250 small-scale engineering structures will be established, with weather monitoring stations and river discharge sensors put in place monitor and gather data.
