COP27 side-event: Unlocking multi-stakeholder collaboration for transformative agrifood systems through NDCs and NAPs

The FAO-UNDP SCALA programme, together with WWF, GAFF and Climate Focus have co-organized a hybrid side event, “Unlocking multi-stakeholder collaboration for transformative agrifood systems through NDCs and NAPs” in the Food and Agriculture Pavilion at COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh.
This side event aimed to highlight countries’ experiences and needs in planning, financing and implementing nationally determined contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) priorities through systems approaches. Discussions emphasized the need for multi-stakeholder collaboration to harness the potential of agrifood systems with examples from Africa.

Side event objectives
Particular attention was given to innovative and systems-level multi-stakeholder approaches and partnerships between private sector entities, government institutions, international organizations, researchers and civil society actors to scale up efforts needed to implement, assess and achieve countries’ NDCs and NAPs targets in agrifood systems.
It also highlighted country perspectives, challenges and lessons in designing and implementing climate solutions in agrifood systems as part of NDC and NAP priorities.
Side event format
The side event was moderated by Julia Wolf, Natural Resources Officer and Global SCALA Programme Coordinator, FAO.
The session started with opening remarks and an overview of untapped opportunities for strengthening the implementation of NDCs and NAPs for agrifood systems transformation by Julie Teng, Adaptation Planning Specialist and Global SCALA Programme Coordinator, UNDP.
Then, a panel of government, civil society, and private sector representatives discussed how they can better drive transformation in agrifood systems. Participants heard country perspectives, challenges, and lessons learned in applying systems approaches and strengthening multi-stakeholder collaboration for planning, financing, and implementing agrifood systems priorities in NDC and NAPs.
This was followed by a Q&A and closing remarks emphasizing progress so far and the need for further action in transforming agrifood systems.
