When: Wednesday 29 March at 4:00pm-5:30pm (GMT-3)
Hosts: UNEP, UNDP, FAO

Countries have recognized the importance of agriculture, land use changes, and food security in their climate adaptation efforts, with 95 percent of updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and 100 percent of submitted National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) including agriculture and food security as a priority. At COP27 in 2022, countries “recognized that scaling-up implementation requires enhanced knowledge-sharing on best practices, access to finance, technology development and transfer, and capacity building”.

Together, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) organized this session at the NAP Expo 2023 to respond to this growing recognition. Participants learned about good practices and gained a better understanding of practical steps to adopt a climate-resilient food security perspective throughout the NAP process through the development of a knowledge sharing platform by the Climate Resilient Food Systems Alliance (CRFS).

Climate Action Review (CAR) matrix tool demonstration

Participants were introduced to the Climate Action Review (CAR) matrix that aims to support national adaptation programmers in the critical transition from NAP planning-to-implementation in the agriculture and land use sectors.

This toolkit – developed and piloted in 10 countries under the FAO-UNDP SCALA programme – outlines a practical, step-by-step process that adaptation practitioners can follow to identify actionable entry points for transformative adaptation in the sector and, subsequently, build project pipelines to scale up adaptation.

The session objectives include:

Presenting practical methods for translating climate adaptation goals into transformative solutions.
Sharing countries’ experiences in the implementation of adaptation in agriculture and land use, including using systems approaches, engaging the private sector, and adopting a food security perspective.

Watch a short recap video from the SCALA Programme on the ground at the event.
