UNDP in Turkmenistan enhances the capacity of national specialists involved in climate change adaptation planning

Turkmenabat, December 2022 - The project 'Development a National Adaptation Planning Process (NAP) in Turkmenistan', implemented by UNDP with the financial support of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection, had hosted a hands-on training for specialists of the Hydrometeorological Service on the use of hydrological equipment.

 

Hydrologists from Ashgabat, Lebap, Mary, and Balkan regions gathered in Turkmenabat for a theoretical overview and practical experience.

 

International expert of the UNDP from the German company OTT Hydromet GmbH, Mr. Lee Gardner, familiarized participants with the operation of devices for measuring the flow velocity and water discharge in large and small rivers. Practical training was carried out on irrigation channel that diverts water from Amudarya river to the Charjew and Danew districts of the Lebap region. Part of the training was devoted to processing the received data with the support of OTT QReview software. The commissioning of these modern hydrological tools will increase the accuracy of data, as well as optimize the daily work processes of Turkmen hydrologists. Furthermore, it can simplify data collection and facilitate digital data archiving.

 

 

Funded by the Green Climate Fund with technical support from UNDP, the overall objective of the NAP project (2021-2024) is to strengthen Turkmenistan’s adaptive and resiliency capacities by developing a national adaptation plan process. The project is focused on developing a national coordination mechanism and governance processes for conducting adaptation planning and measures and on strengthening the evidence base within the water sector so as to provide the information required for effective decision-making. Lastly, the project will increase the capacity of those involved in adaptation planning as within the water sector and adaptation planning in general. 

 

The Hydrometeorological Service is a key organization that provides support in adaptation planning of very important, but vulnerable to climate change sectors of the national economy, such as agriculture and water resources management.
