Case Study

Progress in developing a national monitoring and evaluation system for adaptation in the agriculture sector: a multi-country case study

This case study aims to provide an overview and analysis of lessons learned from different approaches used in nine countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America, in which the Integrating Agriculture in National Adaptation Plans (NAP-Ag) programme was implemented, to promote monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of adaptation in the agriculture sectors as part of National Adaptation Plan (NAP) processes. The case study focus on concrete country experiences in advancing adaptation M&E in the agriculture sector.

Combating climate change using climate-adaptive livelihoods: A story from MOYNA, a women's livelihood group in Bangladesh

'Moyna' consists of 25 women beneficiaries from Kocha village in Dacope upazila, Khulna. Most group members are uneducated and belong to extremely poor families. After receiving training under the GCF-funded project 'Enhancing Adaptive Capacities of Coastal Communities, especially Women, to Cope with Climate Change-Induced Salinity in Bangladesh' (known locally as the Gender-responsive Coastal Adaptation, or GCA  project), 'Moyna' has been cultivating climate-resilient sesame. The members are now educating their family and friends about the advantages of the crop.

Colombia case study: Safeguarding livelihoods and promoting resilience through NAPs

This country case study on Colombia is part of a series that describes the steps taken to formulate and implement National Adaptation Plans (NAPs), with a particular emphasis on adaptation in agriculture (including forestry, livestock and fisheries). The series aims to provide national policy makers with valuable information from colleagues and counterparts in Asia, Africa and Latin America who are on the same NAP journey to address the multiple challenges posed by climate change.

Guatemala case study: Safeguarding livelihoods and promoting resilience through NAPs

This country case study on Guatemala is part of a series that describes the steps taken to formulate and implement National Adaptation Plans (NAPs), with a particular emphasis on adaptation in agriculture (including forestry, livestock and fisheries). The series aims to provide national policy makers with valuable information from colleagues and counterparts in Asia, Africa and Latin America who are on the same NAP journey to address the multiple challenges posed by climate change.

Colombia: advancing monitoring and evaluation of adaptation in the agriculture sector

This case study provides an overview and analysis of lessons learned in developing monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of adaptation in the agriculture sector in Colombia, as part of a broader national adaptation M&E system.

Integrating Agriculture in National Adaptation Plans Programme (NAP-Ag): Safeguarding livelihoods and promoting resilience through National Adaptation Plans

This case study chronicles Viet Nam’s experiences in conducting vulnerability and risk assessments (VRAs) of selected agriculture sectors at the national level and a cost-benefit analysis (CBA) to support sectoral adaptation planning, budgeting, and policy formulation. Lessons learned from these endeavors can provide insights for other countries who are seeking, like Viet Nam, to develop an evidence-based and climate risk-informed National Adaptation Plan (NAP) and/or adaptation plans for the agriculture sector.

Public expenditure analysis for climate change adaptation and mitigation in the agricultural sector: A case study of Uganda

This paper presents a methodology for public expenditure review and analysis for climate change adaptation and mitigation in the agricultural sector. It outlines the basic methodological concepts, including the classification of public expenditures in the context of their links to climate change adaptation and mitigation. It also illustrates how such analysis can usefully contribute to policy decision making to better achieve the climate change adaptation and mitigation goals using the case study of Uganda.

Public expenditure analysis for climate change adaptation and mitigation in the agriculture sector: a case study of Kenya

This document presents a proposed methodology for public expenditure review and analysis for climate change adaptation and mitigation in the agriculture sector (PERCC) and its application to a case study of Kenya. It starts by explaining the basic methodological concepts, classification and labelling of public expenditures that allow for calculating spending in agriculture related to climate change adaptation and mitigation.

Guatemala´s progress in developing a national monitoring and evaluation system for adaptation in the agriculture sector

This case study provides an overview and analysis of lessons learned in developing a national monitoring and evaluation (M&E) system for adaptation in the agriculture sector in Guatemala, led by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Security (MAGA). It presents the climate and policy context into which the M&E system is developed; the consultative process that was applied for designing the M&E system; and the outcome, or the M&E system itself. Finally, lessons learned in terms of challenges, successes and next steps are discussed.

Assessing agroforestry practices and soil and water conservation for climate change adaptation in Kenya: A cost-benefit analysis

The study was carried out under the Integrating Agricultural Sectors into National Adaptation Plans programme, with the aim of capacity building, generating evidence-based results for selecting adaptation options, and informing adaptation policy dialogues on adaptation in agriculture. This study analyses the economic worthiness of adaptation measures currently being practiced by some farmers on their land.
