SCALING UP CLIMATE AMBITION ON LAND USE AND AGRICULTURE (SCALA)

We support over 20 countries to identify pathways for transformative change through NDCs and NAPs

The Scaling up Climate Ambition on Land Use and Agriculture through Nationally Determined Contributions and National Adaptation Plans (SCALA) programme responds to the urgent need for increased action to cope with climate change impacts in the agriculture and land use sectors. SCALA supports over twenty countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America to build adaptative capacity and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in order to meet targets set out in their National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) and nationally determined contributions (NDCs), as well as contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The UNDP and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) are co-leading this 26 million euro programme (2021-2028) with funding from the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV)  through its International Climate Initiative (IKI).

In Focus

SCALA supports 12 core countries to translate their NDC and NAPs into actionable and transformative climate solutions in land use and agriculture with multi-stakeholder engagement.

The three main outcomes of the programme are:

  • Enhanced capacity to identify and appraise innovative and transformative climate-sensitive agriculture and land use actions into NDCs
  • Strengthened national and sectoral plans and budgets to integrate agriculture and land use sectors' climate-related priorities
  • Increased climate action in agriculture and land use through stronger mobilization of private sector engagement and finance
